Optimising people flows

How can we keep pedestrian flows safe and comfortable in our cities, stations, and airports? We provide insight into people flows and create solutions together with you in order to keep areas and buildings accessible and liveable – even when they are crowded.

Safe and comfortable pedestrian flows

Growth in the number of visitors and residents of cities is increasing the pressure on safe and comfortable pedestrian flows. Measures are needed to manage how people move around our cities, to ensure optimal use of public space and mobility systems. Insight into pedestrian flows is essential for this.

Optimising pedestrian flows is also crucial in buildings where many people gather. During peak periods, renovations or in the event of an emergency, bottlenecks can arise on essential walking routes, for example at entrance gates, escalators, cash registers and exits. The smarter your building is designed for pedestrians, the safer and more pleasant their stay will be.

Our approach

We combine data analysis and domain knowledge to gain in-depth insights into the formation and resolution of pedestrian bottlenecks and congestion.

Our first step is always to measure and analyse footfall and behavioural patterns in existing situations. Once mapped out, this can then be used for crowd management purposes. We also simulate pedestrian flows for current and future designs, so that we can test various plans and measures. We do this by identifying and predicting peaks, and combining that with insights into human behaviour.

With our expertise in areas such as station design, airport design, urban planning and wayfinding, we translate these insights into solutions that really work and keep pedestrians moving. Such solutions are an integral part of the mobility transition.

The ultimate result is safe, comfortable pedestrian flows, with buildings and city spaces which are accessible to everyone who uses them.
