Huge capacity expansion delivered at animal health facility

Challenging space constraints and the need to minimise disruption were overcome to deliver a significant increase in production capacity at a site producing veterinary medicines in the Netherlands.
Development of masterplan and integrated design incorporating disciplines including structural engineering, architecture, MEP, infrastructure and fire safety.

The challenge

Our client is a leading player in veterinary medicine. With growing demand for its innovative products, the company needed to more than double production of antigens and vaccines at an existing site. The challenge was to achieve this increase at a site in a residential location where there was no possibility of extension.

Depth of knowledge and LEED experience

Royal HaskoningDHV was contracted to develop a masterplan and integrated design incorporating disciplines including structural engineering, architecture, MEP, infrastructure and fire safety. We then worked with the EPCM partner, FESP, to provide engineering expertise and design reviews through to handover.

Having worked collaboratively & successfully on projects in the past, we knew the depth of knowledge they could bring in terms of planning, civil, structural, architectural and HVAC design when dealing with existing and modular structures.

The solution

Thinking outside the box to streamline site operations

By reviewing existing flows and ways of working, site activities were optimised as part of the process.

It was an opportunity for thinking outside the box, while taking account of the site limitations.

The outcome was a masterplan which could meet the purpose of the facility in the best possible way.

The result

Construction sequence planned to minimise disruption

Space constraints were not the only challenge in upgrading the facility. Disturbance to production was minimised as a result of careful planning of the construction sequence. Office functions were moved offsite during the project and the new office building designed to meet LEED Silver certification. Care was taken to ensure effective communication with stakeholders, including local homes and businesses, throughout the process.

The upgraded facility provides the increased production capacity demands, while meeting all relevant legislative and environmental requirements.
