The challenge: finding the best approach for port expansion

Port of Suva is the Republic of Fiji’s largest container and general port, and its busiest international entry point. It handles almost half the country’s seaborne volumes.

But with the port approaching its capacity, Fiji’s government needed to make a decision. Should it develop existing facilities or build a new site to ensure efficient and sustainable operations over the long term?

The solution: a detailed comparison of 12 potential sites

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has been supporting the Republic of Fiji since 1970, and was engaged to strategically review the government’s development options.

To determine alternative sites, ADB chose Royal HaskoningDHV to evaluate 12 potential options. Our team conducted technical and operational assessments, a concept design, and an economic and financial feasibility assessment, as well as a market study to determine the future growth potential of each site.

Shipping is critical to Fiji’s prosperity, so it’s an honour to support the port’s ongoing expansion and success.

The result: a clear, data-backed port expansion choice

As a result of the study, the Government of Fiji will be able to narrow down the list of 12 options to a single preferred site. Then, our team will perform an economic and financial analysis of the selected approach to ensure it can deliver seamless port operations at scale.
