Building a new deepwater container terminal at the Port of Gdańsk

Baltic Hub (formerly DCT Gdańsk) is undergoing a major expansion project to introduce semi-automated container handling operations and three new terminals. Royal HaskoningDHV is providing engineering, construction supervision, and project management services, starting with the construction of the new Terminal 3, known as “Baltic Hub 3”.

  • Challenge
Expanding the deepwater container terminal at the Port of Gdansk with new terminals and automation
  • Solution
Geotechnical investigations and engineering support to design and construct a new Terminal 3

Kickstarting a major expansion project

With two terminals currently in operation, the construction of the new Baltic Hub 3, will provide a third deep-water quay at the port, increasing the terminals handling capacity by 1.5 million TEUs, to 4.5 million TEUs. The third deep-water quay will be 717 metres long and capable of accommodating the largest container vessels in operation. The new 36-hectare yard will support 28 semi-automated and remotely operated Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes.

The new terminal, which will be the first semi-automated terminal in Poland, is scheduled to be operational in 2024. It’s crucial this development can be completed safely in an active port environment with minimal disruption, as Baltic Hub 3 will be directly adjacent to active berths, the container yard, and vessel navigational maneuvering areas.

Building a practical construction strategy

Baltic Hub contracted Royal HaskoningDHV to manage and supervise site investigations and undertake masterplanning, engineering design and construction management services that are currently ongoing. Our team has worked closely with the client’s project team on:

• Managing and supervision of geotechnical investigations and interpreting results
• Masterplanning, concept and preliminary design
• Constructability and cost estimate reviews
• Contract strategy development, building permits and consents, and tender management
• Construction supervision services

Royal HaskoningDHV has a strong background of project controls and stakeholder management, which helps facilitate early decision making and design integration. We designed the delivery programme to allow teams to undertake multiple activities in parallel which, importantly, will help Baltic Hub 3 become operational more quickly.

Three new terminals, ready to build

The Baltic Hub 3 terminal expansion is just the first stage of the project; it was vital that our planning encompassed the whole development, so the right infrastructure is in place to enable future phases of development
