The Porto Romano Port is now entering its next development phase: the construction of Phase I. And the port is encouraging environmentally and socially conscious strategies to ensure it's an environmental, social, and economic success.
Porto Romano

Albania’s largest seaport is now entering the construction phase of its development. The Porto Romano Port will serve Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia – significantly boosting trade and regional economic growth.

As the only greenfield port development of its size and importance currently underway in Europe, it aims to set the standard of what’s possible from both an engineering and sustainability perspective. For that reason, successfully balancing costs, time, quality, and environmental considerations throughout construction is crucial.

Royal HaskoningDHV has been involved in the project from the planning stage – starting from a blank canvas to create a bespoke strategy for an active, purpose-built port. During planning and design, our experts went above and beyond to support the project and apply their specialist knowledge to ensure its success.

Edi Rama, Albanian Prime Minister said: “I was delighted to see the plans brought forward for the new port at Porto Romano. This is a fantastic opportunity to set a new standard in planning and connectivity. The scheme allows the entire region to benefit from the increased trade, opportunities, and environmental improvements. I feel we are in safe hands with Royal HaskoningDHV, and I look forward to the next stage.”

From vision to reality

Following our successful work on the master plan and detailed design for the Porto Romano Port, Royal HaskoningDHV has also been contracted to support the construction phase of the project. Specifically: ,

  • Tender management for the phase 1 construction contract
  • Tender management for the assignment of a Technical Supervisor
  • Contract management and technical assistance during the full phase 1 construction period
  • Project management and technical consultancy services for other infrastructure projects that are integral to this project’s success

In addition to quality and value for money, we are putting a clear emphasis on the environmental and social impacts of the port throughout the construction tender process. The successful bid will include a clear methodology on mitigation of potential environmental and social impacts of the construction works.

A gateway to more trade and local opportunities

Once complete, the port will increase connectivity in the Western Balkans region, boosting trade opportunities and bringing economic benefits to every nation along its shipping routes. The port will also support the region’s green agenda by championing sustainable infrastructure development and promoting positive social impact.

We’re proud to be involved in this transformative project and hope our green port expertise and experience of delivering large-scale infrastructure projects will help foster a positive, lasting effect on the region.

The development of Porto Romano is at the forefront of integrating best international practices in environmental and social standards with cutting-edge engineering solutions and future-ready technology. This project not only advances transport and social connectivity within the Western Balkans but also strengthens the region's ties with the European Union, setting a new standard for sustainable and innovative infrastructure development.
