The misconception of innovation in renewables

It's a common misconception that renewable energy is synonymous with innovation. While there's considerable excitement around novel applications of existing resources like hydrogen, it's essential to recognise that some of the most effective, affordable, and eco-friendly solutions are already at our disposal. Wind and solar energy lead the pack in this regard. Their rapid global adoption and pivotal role in the shift towards cleaner energy sources testify to their significance.

Harnessing and optimising existing solutions is at the heart of the energy transition, not just inventing new ones.

Europe's transition to renewable energy

In our pursuit of a sustainable future, Europe has made commendable progress in transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. As per the European Environment Agency's insights, by the close of 2020, renewables impressively represented 22% of the European Union's (EU) gross final energy consumption. The growth trajectory of wind and solar power generation is particularly noteworthy. Red Electrica reports that wind power gracefully contributed 21.7% to the total electricity generation, while solar photovoltaics had its share of 6.1% in 2020.

Guided by the United Nations' recommendations, the EU has set ambitious goals, envisioning at least a 60% share of renewables in its final energy consumption by 2030. This commitment aligns with the EU's broader vision of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, a goal that necessitates a robust embrace of renewable energy. To catalyse this transition, significant investments are being made, notably with the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility dedicating a generous portion of its resources to green initiatives, including the promotion of renewables.

Diverse renewable technologies and their impact

Foxed bottom solar and wind energy lead the renewable sector, but floating solar, wind, tidal and wave energy are also gaining momentum. However, these technologies must match the efficiency and affordability of solar and wind. It's crucial to understand that while the renewable sector is vast, not every innovation is revolutionary. Many solutions are waiting in the wings, ready for broader adoption.

Diversity in our energy sources is vital, but our focus should remain on scalable and sustainable technologies.

Emerging technologies in the renewable sector

Storage remains a significant challenge in the renewable sector. The intermittent nature of solar and wind energy necessitates efficient storage mechanisms. While there are multiple storage technologies available, their efficiency varies. For instance, hydrogen, though a potential storage medium, results in considerable energy loss, limiting its usefulness as a storage medium. However, emerging battery technologies, for example, those not reliant on lithium, show immense promise due to their enhanced storage capacities. Pumped storage seems to be the most promising medium in countries with sufficient mountainous conditions.

They offer strategic solutions to stakeholders navigating the uncertainties in the hydrogen value chain. They help overcome challenges and accelerate the energy transition through technical and financial studies. Their expertise encompasses various aspects, including hydrogen storage, port infrastructure, and end-use applications. Notable initiatives like the NortH2 project demonstrate their commitment to decarbonising the industry and promoting sustainable hydrogen solutions.
